Buying "Flown" Space Shuttle Hardware On The Internet

A field guide to what the collector market calls "proof", written by someone who spent ~11 years at Kennedy Space Center working Shuttle launch operations (MPS/SSME hardware, Firing Room console). I went browsing "Space Shuttle Flown Hardware" listings on the usual online marketplaces (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Mercari, the auction aggregator sites – pick your poison, the pathology is identical on all of them) out of semi somewhat morbid curiosity about what people are trying to pass off as flown Space Shuttle Hardware. What I found was worth writing down. Short version: almost none of it is what the listing says, most sellers genuinely don't know what they have, and the price has almost nothing to do with whether the item ever left the ground.


The Four Questions

Every listing collapses five separate questions into one word: "FLOWN". They are not one question. They are four, and each one requires different evidence: When you see "FLOWN" on a listing, ask yourself which of the four questions the evidence shown actually answers. It is almost always only the first one.

Part Numbers - The Free Authentication Nobody Uses

The companies involved in manufacture are diverse. Rockwell International's Space Division in Downey built the Orbiter (though check the date, because that same outfit was North American Aviation until 1967 and North American Rockwell until 1973, and Boeing after 1996), with Rocketdyne doing the SSMEs, Thiokol in Utah casting the SRB motors (branded Morton Thiokol from 1982 to 1989, which is the window that includes Challenger), USBI assembling and recovering the boosters, Martin Marietta at Michoud fabricating the External Tank (and only becoming Lockheed Martin after the 1995 merger, so an ET part with "Lockheed Martin" on it is late or wrong), Lockheed Missiles & Space making the tiles, Aerojet the OMS engines, Marquardt the RCS thrusters, Sundstrand the APUs, Pratt & Whitney the fuel cells, and Spar Aerospace in Canada the RMS arm; go back a program and it is North American Aviation in Downey on the Apollo Command and Service Module, Grumman at Bethpage on the Lunar Module, Boeing at Michoud on the Saturn V S-IC first stage, North American at Seal Beach on the S-II second stage (that is your V7- prefix right there, see below), Douglas at Huntington Beach on the S-IVB, Chrysler on the Saturn IB first stage, IBM in Huntsville on the Instrument Unit, Rocketdyne again on the F-1 and J-2 engines, Lockheed Propulsion on the escape tower, ILC Dover on the A7L suit and Hamilton Standard on its backpack, and McDonnell Douglas on the Skylab workshop; go back further still and it is McDonnell in St. Louis on both Mercury and Gemini, Chrysler on Redstone, Convair on Atlas, Martin on Titan II, and Lockheed on Agena – which is a long way of saying that the manufacturer name and the program name have to overlap in time, and when a listing pairs "North American Aviation" with "Space Shuttle Orbiter" it has convicted itself in a single line without any help from you. Likewise saying 'Apollo Space Shuttle Bolt' makes absolutely no sense.

Drawing numbers tell you the program and whether it is vehicle or ground hardware, and they are stamped right on the part. I did not do avionics, but in ~11 years I do not remember seeing flight hardware with anything but these formats: Also: External Tank hardware CANNOT be flown-and-recovered. The ET was expended on every single flight and broke up over the ocean. Anything on Earth that is genuinely ET hardware is by definition spare, test, or production stock. A listing that says "space-flown external tank" is wrong about one of those two words, guaranteed.

The Tags - Learn Two Colors

This is the part nobody outside the program writes down, and every listing I looked at got it backwards. Here is the interesting wrinkle: an orange 23-244 wired to a part is actually decent evidence the part was INSTALLED, because defect reports get written against installed configurations – line gets dinged during processing, QA inspects and tags it, part gets removed and replaced. Orbiter hardware? Yes. Flown? Who knows – all you know is that it likely came off during a ground flow, it may have been installed and came right off the vehicle it was on before the part launched again. Installed and flown are different questions. The collector market has no vocabulary for "genuine Orbiter part, installed, removed under paperwork, zero flight time" – which describes a very large population of parts. Same with a part marked 'Serviceable Tag' R.T.S. (Return To Service). It means the part was checked out of inventory and returned to inventory.

And remember that used-looking is not flown-looking. Pyro devices are lot-acceptance tested – samples out of every production lot get fired on a test stand. A fired separation component from a testbed is physically identical to one that fired in flight, especially the ones that live in sealed cavities behind doors that close before entry. Some hardware categories have NO flight signature at all. Soot proves a firing, not a flight.

What The Money Actually Says

In 2000, Charles Bell's estate was auctioned off on Merritt Island. Bell was a NASA design engineer at KSC for 37 years who spent decades buying NASA surplus – fifty-six tractor-trailer containers of it across 7 acres. I went to some of those Ransom Road surplus auctions myself (for cars... interesting... alot of trash, some good stuff but not much). One buyer from Charles Bell's collection took several trailers home, sat on them for twenty years, then consigned ~900 lots through Puckett Auctions of Muncie, Indiana across four sales in summer 2020. The realized prices are public, and they are the only measured dataset that exists for this material. One day, one catalog (you have to create an account / log in to see the items), sorted by the price when the hammer came down:

Read that table twice. The correctly numbered, genuinely Orbiter parts are all at the BOTTOM. The top of the market was a broken hand tool and a strip of webbing. The entire Orb/ET separation interface – bolt, compression disk, canister, frangible nut, umbilical gasket, all almost certainly used flight-class hardware – sold for $1,125 combined. The torque wrench alone brought $850.

The rule this teaches: buyers pay for what they can IMAGINE, not for what flew. Everyone can picture a tech at the Cape holding a torque wrench. Nobody can picture themselves holding a monoball gasket, because you have to already know what one is. Price tracks recognizability, and recognizability is inversely correlated with flight likelihood, because real flight hardware is unmarked, unglamorous, and requires somebody who worked the aft compartment to tell you what it is.

Six years later, that same $275 canister was back online for $1,700 with a new description ("external fuel tank liner" – wrong, it is Orbiter-side, the ET was never recovered) and the same missing paperwork. The QA card that sold for $60 with two clips on it was relisted with the clips REMOVED and a laminated sticker added reading "FLOWN IN SPACE ONBOARD SHUTTLE FOR MULTIPLE MISSION". The only genuine artifacts on the card were subtracted, and the price went up. That is the market you are shopping in.

Is a Certificate of Authenticity worth anything?

A Certificate Of Authenticity is worth exactly as much as (a) what the signer was in a position to know, and (b) what the certificate specifically claims. Run every COA through those two filters: The only COA that means anything is a period NASA/contractor document – a 2-155A, a removal PR, a logbook page – naming a vehicle, and ideally a mission, that matches the part in your hand. If the seller has that, the paperwork is what you are buying and the metal came free. If the seller does not have that, you are buying metal.

And here is the part most people do not know: you cannot write to NASA and ask. We kept meticulous paperwork on every part while it was in the system – and then the records met their retention schedules and were lawfully destroyed, same as the hardware was lawfully surplused. Two disposal processes, both working exactly as designed, neither one aware of the other. The processing paperwork that survives in a collector's frame is not a receipt. It is the ONLY surviving copy of the record. The paperwork IS the archive.

Exporting This Stuff - The Legal Hazard Nobody In The Market Knows Exists

The obligatory disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, and anyone actually shipping hardware internationally should get a real classification (a CCATS request through BIS costs nothing but time) rather than trusting a web page. That said, here is the landscape, because I watched a seller offer genuine Orbiter separation-interface hardware with "free shipping to any Domestic or International location" and I am fairly sure they have no idea what they are holding:

The Buying Rules, Condensed


None of this means don't buy. I enjoy this stuff, obviously – I spent an evening identifying the entire Orb/ET separation interface scattered across auction listings by sellers who called the pieces everything from a Polaris battery to an SRB sleeve. A genuine V072 part with no paperwork is still a genuine V072 part, and at the REAL clearing price ($50-275, per the table) it is a perfectly good display piece and an honest piece of the program. Just know which of the five questions you are paying for, because the seller is answering question one and charging you for question four.

Hope for the best, plan for the worst, and read the dataplate. The room in Muncie did, and the Polaris battery is probably still for sale. And, BTW, the "NASA Seeds in Space" they are asking $120 for was flown on LDEF and the seed packets sent to school kids around the world free for the asking.
