Motorcycle Trip Planning
This page is about the DECISIONS – where, when, how far, where you sleep. The physical stuff (what goes in the panniers, the tents, the straps) is over on the Equipment page. The two go together: the plan tells you what equipment you need, and the equipment limits what plans are realistic.
Planning is a prior, not a guarantee. You will still have an event you didn't think of – that is the story you get to tell later. What planning buys you is that when the surprise shows up, the OTHER twelve things are already handled and you have the slack to deal with it. The steps below are roughly in order, because the early decisions gate the later ones.
Step 1 – What kind of trip is this?
There are two basic shapes, and they get planned differently:
- Destination trip – You are going TO something: a national park, a rally, a specific road, family, or a chain of destinations connected by a wandering route. The destination(s) sets the calendar (park permits, event dates) and the route mostly draws itself. Most of this page applies.
- "Just get on the bike and go" – The wander. You still need Steps 3, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 12 (weather, fire, fuel, bike condition, documents, check-in). What you can skip is the reservation machinery – but understand the trade: no reservations means flexibility, and it also means rolling into a full campground at 8 PM in July. Wandering works best in shoulder seasons and away from the marquee parks.
Decide which one you are on, honestly. A "wander" that secretly needs to hit Glacier on the Fourth of July weekend is a destination trip that skipped its homework.
Step 2 – Maps and the route
Get some Butler Maps for the states you will travel in. These maps show you the BEST curvy rides, rated. I look at my draft route and compare it against Butler – many times there is a G1 or G2 road running parallel to the highway I was about to take, for maybe 30 extra minutes. Take the good road. That is the whole point.
If you see mountain roads or passes on the route (usually the MOST fun), go to the state DOT road condition site and confirm the pass is even open. The big ones open LATE: Going-to-the-Sun Road, Tioga Pass, Beartooth, Independence Pass, Washington State Passes can be closed into late June depending on snowpack, and they close early in fall. A route that depends on one closed pass is a route that just grew 150 miles.
For western Canada / Alaska, buy The MILEPOST. Literally a mile-by-mile description of the roads and what services exist. There is a page specifically for riding your bike in the north.

Step 3 – Weather
Look up the AVERAGE temperatures and rainfall for the area in your timeframe. Good sources:
- WeatherSpark – The best single answer. Climate averages by month for any town, in readable graphs. Start here.
- US Climate Data – Simple monthly normals, highs / lows / precipitation.
- Weather Underground History – What it was ACTUALLY like this same week last year. For mountain shoulder seasons this beats averages, because averages hide the swings.
- National Weather Service – For the 7-day forecast once you are close to departure.
Five caveats that the average-temperature pages will NOT tell you:
- Altitude is weather. Figure roughly 3.5°F lost for every 1,000 feet you climb. The town at the bottom of the pass can be 80°F while the top of the pass is 40°F and sleeting – late July on the Continental Divide I ran into COLD RAINY weather while the valleys were baking. When you look up averages, look up the HIGH point of your route, not just the towns you sleep in. Know your windchill and heat stroke vs heat exhaustion.
- No matter what the averages say, carry 3-season gear. Every time. The averages are a distribution and you WILL ride the tails of it eventually.
- Heat routing. If the route crosses desert in summer, the plan is ride at 6 AM, done by early afternoon. A 300 mile day across Nevada in July is really a 5 AM to noon day, not a 9 to 5 day. This changes your daily mileage math in Step 6, and it changes where you sleep the night BEFORE the desert segment. Also note that MY gear (ATGATT no matter the weather) is a mesh green(ish) color. I USED to wear all black but a 95 degree day in stop and go traffic convinced me that was a bad idea.
- Wind. The plains states are VERY windy. When you see windmills you can bet on heavy wind, and the windmills face the direction it is coming FROM – free wind vane, use it. Know the wind-shadow behavior: when you pass 'behind' something (a hill, grain silos, a semi) the wind suddenly stops and the bike moves; when you clear the obstacle be ready for the push in the OPPOSITE direction. And wind eats your tank – more on that in Step 7.
- Midwest storm fronts. They march west to east across the country, and while ON the trip you should track them daily, not just at departure. Fronts with straight-line winds, downpours, and lightning are HORRIBLE on a bike. You have two choices: ride through and try to punch out the far side, or sit a day and let it pass overhead. Letting it pass is, IMHO, the better option every time – I have had 106°F in California and I will take that over a plains thunderstorm any day. This is exactly what the slack day in your schedule is FOR.
Step 4 – Wildfire
Fire season is getting longer on BOTH ends – earlier in the north (Canada, Alaska, the boreal forest, because of earlier snowmelt) and later in California and the Southwest. The old calendar is a starting point, not a guarantee. Rough regional picture: Southwest May–June before the monsoon, California June into November (fall wind events are the destructive window – and SoCal has burned in JANUARY), Pacific Northwest and Northern Rockies July–September with August the worst, BC Interior mirrors the PNW, Ontario / Quebec peak in June, the Prairies in July.
The useful way to think about it is a series of gates. Each one exists so the later, time-pressured decisions are cheap:
- 3–6 months out: Does the route put me in a region during its historical peak? Check the US Drought Monitor – multi-year drought is the loaded gun. If yes, accept the risk and build slack, or shift the calendar.
- 1–2 months out: Check the NIFC Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook (monthly, 4-month lookahead maps). For every route segment in an "above normal" zone, identify the parallel alternate corridor NOW and book refundable lodging in those zones. This is contingency design, not go / no-go.
- 7–14 days out: Actual fires are now data. InciWeb for US incidents, the CWFIS interactive map for Canada. Anything active within ~50 miles of a segment means the alternate from the last gate goes on standby.
- 1–3 days out: Two SEPARATE questions – is the road open, and is the air breathable? They decouple. Roads reopen while the AQI is still 200+. Check fire.airnow.gov for US smoke, FireSmoke.ca for Canada, and the state DOT for closures. A delay is underrated – PNW smoke often clears in 2–3 days with a wind shift, so shuffling a rest day beats a 300 mile detour.
- Morning of: DOT feed and AQI at the start point and the destination. Wind events move closures on hours, not days.
Two more things. Smoke travels; flame doesn't – for a rider the AQI radius matters more than the fire perimeter, and a full-face helmet does NOTHING against smoke particulates. Decide your personal AQI number BEFORE the trip (a 6–8 hour riding day at AQI 150–200 is a real exposure dose, not just haze) – most riders never pick a number in advance, which means they pick it standing in the smoke. And flag any single-road segment (Going-to-the-Sun, Beartooth, Tioga) back at the route stage – those have no short alternate, so a fire there is a hard gate, not a detour.
Step 5 – Reservations and permits
This gates the CALENDAR, which is why it is here and not at the end:
- National park timed-entry / vehicle reservations – Glacier, Yosemite, Arches and others have used them, and the rules CHANGE every year. Check recreation.gov in the winter for a summer trip. Some reservations drop months ahead, some drop the day before – know which game you are playing.
- Popular campgrounds sell out up to 6 months ahead. BLM dispersed camping and the out-of-the-way sites are the flexible fallback.
- Cave tours, ranger-led tours, ferries – anything with a fixed seat count, book early.
For the day-to-day lodging on a long trip, my method is a ROLLING window: keep the next 4 or 5 nights reserved and book new ones as you go. That keeps flexibility for weather and whim without gambling on walk-in availability. OBVIOUSLY for National Parks you have to book months in advance – but you don't lose much money if you have to change plans, so book them anyway. Also SOME parks have walk-in backpacker areas and MIGHT let you camp there with the motorcycle – worth asking at the entrance if your plans went sideways. Two gotchas: some hotels in tourist areas require you to book Saturday AND Sunday together if you want the weekend – a Friday-night-only request gets refused, and you may need to shift where you stop to route around it. And a place can have Thursday wide open while Friday and Saturday are booked solid, so the DAY of the week you hit a town matters as much as the town. I bring the laptop with Garmin Basecamp loaded so I can adjust the route on the fly when the reservations force a change – which they will.
Step 6 – The riding math: miles per day, riding days vs. staying days
Miles per day depends on the ROAD, not the calendar. My rough numbers: 400+ miles of interstate slab is doable but joyless; 250 miles of Butler G1 twisties is a FULL day and your hands will know it; mix days land in between. Whatever number you pick, the first day and the last day should be shorter – the first because you always leave late, the last because you are tired and that is when mistakes happen.
Riding days vs. staying days: for anything over a week, plan a full day OFF the bike roughly weekly. That is the laundry day, and it is also the day your brain catches up. A laundromat load runs $3–$6 in quarters (bring the quarters and the HE sheets – see the Equipment page). Hotels with guest laundry solve this neatly – worth filtering for when you book.
Camping vs. motels: my personal guide is 1 to 2 nights camping, then 1 night in a motel – the motel is the good night's sleep, the shower, and the laundry. Hauling the tent off the bike EVERY night gets old; my Route 66 ride taught me THAT lesson. If you need to travel fast and light for a long distance then motels / hotels are the answer – but if you are doing THAT, why are you on a motorcycle? :-) Costs, roughly: BLM free to $5, state campgrounds $8–$30, KOA up to $40 (shower, water, electric, Wi-Fi), motels ~$100, hotels $140+.
Daylight is part of the math – and up north there is a LOT of it
In the northern states and Canada in summer, your riding day is MUCH longer than you may be used to. Around the summer solstice at the US / Canada border (about 49°N – think Glacier country, the Washington / BC crossings): sunrise around 5:10 AM, sunset around 9:20 PM – 16+ hours of daylight, and usable riding light (civil twilight) stretches that to roughly 4:30 AM to 10 PM. Keep going north and it keeps growing: Edmonton ~17 hours, Whitehorse ~19, Fairbanks ~22 – up there the sun barely bothers to set. The flip side flips HARD: those same border latitudes get about 8.5 hours of daylight in December, and in the fall shoulder season you are LOSING 3+ minutes a day, so a September trip planned off your July memories comes up an hour short by the end of it.
Three caveats before you spend all that daylight:
- Daylight budget is not riding budget. 17 hours of light does not mean 17 hours in the saddle – fatigue doesn't care what the sun is doing. The long days are best spent as EARLY starts and RELAXED stops, not marathon days.
- The bonus hours are the wildlife hours. Deer, elk, and moose are most active at dawn and dusk – and in June at 49°N, dawn and dusk ARE the bonus hours, 4:30 AM and 10 PM. The extra light comes with the highest animal-strike risk of the day attached. In moose country treat dusk riding as a real decision, not a default.
- Low sun angle. Northern latitudes mean the sun sits low and CRAWLS along the horizon in the morning and evening. On an east–west road you can have it square in your eyes (or square in the eyes of oncoming traffic) for an hour at a time, not ten minutes.
Step 7 – Fuel and range
In the west and in Canada / Alaska you MUST map your gas stops. I have seen multiple signs that say 'Next Service 110 Miles'. KNOW your range – your REAL range with the bike loaded and a headwind, not the brochure number. If it will be close, carry a fuel bladder.
What "real range" means in practice:
- Wind is a range tax. Normal riding I get around 47 miles per gallon on the Tiger; riding INTO plains wind I lose 10 to 20 MPG. That "300 mile range" is a calm-day number – on a windy day across Kansas it can quietly become 200, and the gas stop you planned at mile 250 is now a fuel bladder story. When the windmills show up (Step 3), redo the fuel math.
- Small stations, small choices. Some rural stations only carry 87 octane. For most bikes one tank of 87 is survivable – check what YOURS tolerates before the trip, not at the pump. And some small stations and cafes are cash-only or cash-preferred, so carry some (more in Step 10).
- Canada 'Cardlock' stations. If the station sign (Co-Op is the common one) says 'Cardlock', it means you need THEIR fleet card – your credit card is useless there. It is not a broken pump, it is a members-only pump. Ride to the next station, and count Cardlocks as ZERO when you are doing remote-stretch fuel math.
If you ride with others: the GROUP's range is the SMALLEST tank in the group, minus a reserve. Plan every fuel stop for that bike and nobody has a bad day. Same logic applies to pace – the group rides at the pace the least comfortable rider can hold, and you agree on that BEFORE the kickstands come up, not over the intercom at 60 MPH.
Step 8 – Bike service math
Nobody puts this on trip planning pages and everybody gets bitten by it eventually. Before you leave, do the arithmetic:
- Tires: Trip miles vs. miles left on the tires. A 5,000 mile trip on tires with 4,000 miles of life means you are booking a tire stop MID-ROUTE. Dealers in the west can be 300 miles apart and want appointments – find the shop and call BEFORE you leave, not from a parking lot in Nevada.
- Service interval: Will the trip blow through an oil change or a major service? Either do it early before departure, or plan the stop.
- Chain / final drive, brake pads, recalls: Same math. Check for open recalls while you are at it.
- Dealer map: Know where the dealers for YOUR marque sit along the route. When something breaks, you want to already know the answer to "where is the nearest shop that stocks my parts."
Step 9 – Navigation: building the route and getting it onto the GPS
The GPS hardware itself is on the Equipment page. This is the workflow. Mine is Garmin Basecamp on the PC, then the route goes to the Zumo XT2 on the bike. Basecamp is old and Garmin barely acknowledges it exists any more, but nothing else gives you the same control over a multi-day route.
The Basecamp to Zumo XT2 procedure
The XT2 lives in Garmin's newer Tread / Explore ecosystem and does NOT play nicely with Basecamp's device-transfer function the way the older Zumos did. The workaround is a file-level copy, and it works reliably:
- 1. Build the route in Basecamp. Set the activity profile to Motorcycling and set your avoidances (highways, tolls, unpaved – whatever your preference) BEFORE you draw, because the profile changes how Basecamp calculates. Lay down your via points and shaping points, then Recalculate and LOOK at the whole route. Basecamp will happily route you down a goat path if you let it.
- 2. Watch for straight-line segments. If a section of the route shows as a straight line cutting cross-country after a Recalculate, the route points in that section are missing the road-snap data Basecamp needs (in the GPX guts, a subclass extension on each route point). Symptoms: the route looked fine, you recalculated, and now a segment ignores the roads. Fix: delete and re-place the points in that section so Basecamp snaps them itself, then recalculate again. If you IMPORT a GPX built elsewhere, check the entire route for this before trusting it.
- 3. Circular routes: split them. Start and end at the same point confuses route calculation. Make it two routes – outbound and return – or at minimum put the endpoint a block away from the start.
- 4. Export from Basecamp. Select the route (and any waypoints that go with it), File > Export Selection, save as GPX.
- 5. Copy the file to the XT2. Plug the XT2 into the PC with USB, put it in file transfer (MTP) mode when it asks. It shows up like a phone does. Copy your GPX file into Internal Storage\GPX.
- 6. Import on the device. Unplug and restart the XT2 – it notices new GPX files and offers to import, or you can pull them in manually through the app menu's track / route import. Import the route.
- 7. Check the route ON THE DEVICE before trusting it. The XT2 recalculates the route with ITS OWN settings, and if the device avoidances don't match what you set in Basecamp, the XT2 will quietly "improve" your route back onto the highway you spent an hour avoiding. Match the avoidance settings on the device to what you used in Basecamp, open the imported route, and scan the shape against what you built. Do this at home, not at the first fuel stop.
- 8. One route per riding day. A week-long trip is 7 routes, not 1. Smaller routes calculate faster on the device, and when you deviate (you will), a recalculation only scrambles that day, not the whole trip.
Multi-day trips: I keep the per-day GPX files on the laptop as the master copies. If a route gets mangled on the device, delete it on the XT2 and re-copy the file – 2 minutes, done. The files on the PC are the source of truth; the device is just a display.
Step 10 – Documents and insurance
- Registration and proof of insurance ON the bike. Boring, mandatory.
- Roadside / towing that actually covers motorcycles. Many roadside plans quietly exclude bikes or cap the tow at a distance that is a joke in the west. Read yours. A 150 mile tow out of pocket costs more than years of the right coverage.
- Medical coverage away from home. Know what your health plan does out of state. If you are on Medicare, foreign emergency coverage is limited or absent depending on your plan – see the Canada note below.
- Canada by land: A passport works, and so does an Enhanced Driver's License (EDL) – and the EDL is EASIER at the booth, one card does license and border document. Only five states issue them: Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, and Vermont. The catch: EDL is valid for LAND and SEA crossings only. If anything goes wrong and you have to FLY home from Canada, you need a passport. My answer: carry the EDL for the crossing, and know where your passport is at home so someone can overnight it if the trip goes sideways. Also carry proof of motorcycle insurance valid in Canada (US policies generally are, but confirm with your insurer and get it in writing).
- Cash. Some smaller cafes and gas stations appreciate cash or don't take cards at all – carry a reserve. In Canada, pull Canadian dollars from an ATM AT A BANK, not the hotel lobby, to avoid a skimmer (that is the CyberSecurity engineer in me). Credit card travel notice if your bank still wants one, and a bag of quarters for laundry.
Step 11 – The rules change at the state line
Traffic law is state law, and what is routine at home can be a ticket (or worse, a bad assumption at speed) two states over. Canada adds its own layer. The canonical lookup is the AMA state law database – check it for every state you will cross. The ones that actually bite:
- Helmet laws. The US is a patchwork of universal, partial (age / insurance conditions), and no-requirement states – the Wikipedia motorcycle helmet article covers the landscape. My rule doesn't change at the border: ATGATT, everywhere, every time. But KNOW the law anyway, because in partial-law states the conditions matter for passengers and for insurance. Canada: helmets mandatory in every province, full stop.
- Lane splitting and filtering. As of 2026: full lane splitting (between MOVING traffic) is legal ONLY in California. Lane FILTERING – between stopped or slow traffic, with strict speed caps and conditions – is legal in Utah, Montana, Arizona, Colorado, and Minnesota, and every one of those five sets DIFFERENT conditions (Minnesota's is the most permissive; Colorado's law sunsets in 2027 unless renewed; Arizona is stopped-traffic-only, 45 mph roads or less). Hawaii allows a shoulder-pass variant. Everywhere else, riding between lanes gets you cited under general traffic law. This one changes almost every year – check the current map before the trip, not from memory.
- "Dead red" laws. Many states let a motorcycle proceed through a red light that will not detect the bike, after a complete stop and a wait – but the conditions (how long you wait, which intersections) vary state to state, and in the states WITHOUT such a law you are just running a red. Know which kind of state you are in before you rely on it.
- Right turn on red. Legal by default across the US with ONE famous exception: New York City, where it is prohibited unless a sign permits it. Canada mirrors this: legal in most provinces, but banned on the entire island of Montreal.
- Merge geometry – the ramp may not do what you assume. On newer western highways the on-ramp gives you a long acceleration lane. On older systems – Oklahoma, I am looking at you – the ramp can end in a YIELD sign with essentially NO acceleration lane, what riders call suicide lanes. Ask me how I know ;-). The rule: never assume the ramp lane continues. Look at the merge BEFORE you commit your speed to it, especially east of the Rockies on highways built in the 1950s and 60s.
- Ebikes vs. motorcycles. I refuse to call them eMotorcycles – above the three-class ebike framework they are plain MOTORCYCLES that happen to have an electric motor, and increasingly the law agrees: license, registration, helmet, and insurance requirements kick in, and they differ state by state. If you ride an electric two-wheeler across a state line, its legal classification can change underneath you – what was a "bicycle" at home may be an unregistered motorcycle where you are standing. The derestricted ones sold as ebikes are the enforcement mess of the decade in progress.
- HOV and express lanes. Federal law lets motorcycles use HOV lanes nationwide unless a sign specifically says otherwise. Express TOLL lanes are murkier – some need a transponder set to motorcycle mode, some toll you as a car if you get it wrong. There apparently are municipalities that don't understand the US code, some have corrected this error.
- Tolls. The transponder ecosystems do not interoperate coast to coast (E-ZPass country vs. the western systems), motorcycle rates vary, and pay-by-plate will find your registration eventually – with fees. Two worked examples from my Route 66 ride: I bought an Illinois I-Pass for tolls I might "accidentally" hit – and sure enough I did; the I-Pass is also honored across many eastern states, so it earns its keep. Oklahoma: I-44 is ALL toll road, and if construction detours you onto it, you pay whether you planned to or not – via PlatePay, which took a couple of WEEKS to even process my plate before I could pay. Sort out toll coverage for the states on the route before you leave, or budget for the surprise invoices.
- Fuel. NO E15, ever, in a motorcycle – and in the midwest E15 hides on the same blender pump as everything else, sometimes as the CHEAPEST button. Read the pump. Also: New Jersey is the last attendant-only state – you generally pump your own bike but the attendant has to be involved, so don't be surprised when someone walks up to your fill.
- Equipment enforcement. Exhaust noise laws exist everywhere but ENFORCEMENT varies wildly by state and city. Handlebar height limits still exist in some states. Headphone / earbud laws vary – some states allow one ear only; helmet SPEAKERS (Bluetooth headsets) are generally fine everywhere, which is one more reason they beat earbuds.
- Passengers. Footrest requirements are near-universal; a handful of states set minimum passenger ages. If you are two-up, check both for the states you cross.
- Canada specifics. Speed limits and distances are in km – flip your GPS and cluster to metric at the border and just live there, converting in your head at 110 km/h is how you drift 10 over. Radar detectors are ILLEGAL in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, and the Atlantic provinces – confiscation on the spot, real fines – while legal in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan; if you carry one, know the province list cold. Photo radar and speed cameras are common and the ticket follows your plate home. And check THEIR holidays, not yours – I visited the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology (a VERY good museum) on July 1. Canada Day. It was VERY busy.
Step 12 – Renting a bike in another country
A different animal from riding your own bike across a land border, and I am not giving the ENTIRE procedure here – just the gotchas so you know what you are getting into before you wire a deposit to a rental shop in another hemisphere:
- International Driving Permit (IDP). Many countries require it alongside your license, and rental shops often demand it even where the country doesn't. In the US you get one at AAA for about $20, same day, two passport photos. Your license MUST already carry the motorcycle endorsement – the IDP is a translation of your license, not an upgrade to it.
- License class vs. displacement. Some countries tier motorcycle licenses by engine size. A shop may legally be unable to rent you the big bike even with a full US endorsement. Ask before you book, not at the counter.
- Insurance is where the money hides. The quoted daily rate is NOT the cost. Check the excess / deductible – it can be thousands, theft is sometimes excluded entirely, and your US auto policy and your credit card's rental coverage almost universally do NOT cover motorcycles. Price the excess-reduction option honestly; it is usually worth it.
- Travel medical + evacuation insurance. Your domestic health coverage likely does little or nothing abroad, and a medical evacuation flight is a six-figure bill. Buy a per-trip policy that explicitly covers motorcycle riding – some exclude it, some exclude it above a displacement, READ the exclusions.
- The walkaround. Before you sign, video every panel, both wheels, the pipes, the bar ends, the mirrors – timestamped. Check tires, brakes, and chain like you were buying it, because for damage purposes you ARE. If the tires are corded – worn through the rubber to where the fabric cords underneath show – refuse the bike, and wonder what else that shop skipped. The subtler tire gotcha: tread down near the wear bars is "legal" at pickup but will NOT survive your 2,000 mile loop, and at return the argument about who pays for the new tire is one you will lose. Point it out and get the tire condition noted in writing BEFORE you ride away. This is the single highest-leverage five minutes of the whole rental.
- Gear. Rental gear exists and it is a lottery on quality, fit, and smell. Bring your own helmet at MINIMUM – it is the one item where fit is safety. If you are a big rider (ask me how I know), assume NOTHING abroad fits you and pack accordingly.
- The deposit. Expect a large credit card hold, sometimes thousands. Make sure the card has the headroom and know how long the hold takes to release after return.
- Local rules and local physics. Which side of the road (and give yourself a day of low-stakes riding to rewire your brain if it's the left). Filtering / lane-splitting legality varies. Helmet and equipment laws vary (some countries mandate hi-viz or carrying specific items). Fuel grades and octane ratings are labeled differently. And local traffic CULTURE – right-of-way customs, horn use, what trucks do – matters more than the written rules. Spend your first hour riding like everyone is trying to kill you, then calibrate.
- Cross-border restrictions. Many rentals prohibit taking the bike into neighboring countries, or require prior written permission and extra paperwork. If your dream route crosses a border, confirm IN WRITING before booking.
A precautionary word about Asia
Full disclosure: I have not ridden in Asia, so this is the distilled report of riders who have, not my own miles – YMMV applies double. The counterintuitive part first: a motorcycle is arguably the RIGHT vehicle for much of Asia. Two wheels is the native traffic species there – on a bike you move WITH the swarm instead of fighting it from inside a car. But the traffic operates on completely different physics: it is a continuous NEGOTIATION, not a rulebook. The horn means "I am here," not "I am angry." Right of way follows MASS – trucks, then buses, then cars, then you – and the flow works because everyone is predictable, not because anyone stops. Riders who do well describe it as moving like water; riders who do badly are the ones who brought their right-of-way expectations from home and tried to enforce them. Go with the flow – do what the other riders do; they know the road and you don't. And recalibrate your speed expectations: you are probably not doing 70 MPH on a nice smooth interstate-grade highway, you are doing a MAXIMUM of 35 MPH on a somewhat-paved road between cities. Which means you plan Asian distances in HOURS, not miles – a 100 mile day there is a FULL day, and the Step 6 riding math does NOT transfer.
The precautionary story is depressingly standardized, and you have probably seen the GoFundMe version of it: tourist rents a scooter in Thailand or Bali, no motorcycle endorsement on their license, no IDP, crashes – and discovers their travel medical insurance is VOID because they were riding unlicensed. Now it is a six-figure medical evacuation on their own dime. Motorcycle crashes are THE leading serious injury for tourists in Southeast Asia, and "nobody checks licenses at the rental shop" is precisely the trap: the shop doesn't check, the INSURANCE COMPANY does, afterward, reading the exclusions with a magnifying glass. Everything in the rental list above applies in Asia with the volume turned up: proper endorsement, IDP, insurance that explicitly covers riding, your own helmet (rental helmets there can be decorative), and add three local rules – do NOT ride at night (unlit vehicles, livestock, dogs), assume the road surface will surprise you (sand, diesel, monsoon runoff), and remember much of the region rides on the LEFT. And India is the deep end of the deep end – riders comfortable everywhere else in Asia describe it as another level entirely. For a first India ride, a guided tour with a support vehicle is not cheating, it is engineering.
Step 13 – The check-in protocol
Someone at home knows the route and knows tonight's planned endpoint, every day. The rule is simple: a message when you stop for the night, and an agreed action if the message doesn't come (call, then call the last known lodging, THEN escalate – agree on the timing in advance so nobody panics at hour one or waits until hour twenty). If the route goes through no-signal country – and in the west it WILL – a satellite communicator closes the gap; that hardware is on the Equipment page. The protocol is the plan; the device is just the transport.
Step 14 – Commit
At some point you have to look at what you have planned, what your best guess is (with hopefully some room built into the schedule) and commit. You have done your best. You are as prepared as you will ever be. Gather your clothes, your maps, your route, and get on the road. If you forgot something, you can buy it on the road. Yesterday was the best day to leave – today is the next best day.
MOST IMPORTANTLY – Things will fail. Issues will come up. 'Man plans and God laughs' – old Rabbinic phrase. This is an adventure. Don't get bent out of shape. You can always buy something or get it fixed. If you believe there is something after this life, the only thing you will take with you are memories – and this trip is one of those.
