Motorcycle Trip Through The Cascades On Columbia River Washington State
Riding next to the Columbia River is an amazing mixture of sun, dappled sunlight and tree-lined road all within sight of the river for the first half, then semi-arid wide-open spaces for the second half.
Getting to WA-14 is a long drive from just about any part of Washington State, if you travel East on WA-14 from I-5 you should think about spending a night in Hood River, Oregon. There isn't much East of Hood River on WA-14. Note that Oregon has unusual gas laws. Until August 2023 Oregon required an attendant to pump your gas for you; New Jersey is now the only state with a full self-service ban. Today in Oregon you can pump your own or ask an attendant to do it. On a motorcycle the attendants actually prefer you pump it yourself --> motorcyclists get cranky about anyone touching their paint or tank, and the attendants would rather not deal with that. ATTENTION! East of Hood River you are in the Western United States. PAY ATTENTION to the 'No Service for the next XXX miles' while in the western states. Fill up your tank at Hood River, you have about 122 miles before the next gas station in Umatilla Oregon on I-82 (ask me how I know ... :-) ...)

As you can see from the below pictures as you drive from the West to the East the trees disappear and the grass and rocks start to appear
